Barstow to Kingman

This was the best day so far.  We had lots planned.  I drove and Steve was an expert navigator.  One of the places we wanted to visit was the Amboy Crater, but when Steve researched the route (suggested by Ian at Santa Monica) and when we reached Ludlow, we found that this section was closed because the route had been damaged by floodwater!

However, we did manage a coffee stop!

En route to Ludlow we passed the Bagdad cafe which is a well known stop on the Route

Bagdad cafe.  The door was covered in millions of stickers.  It did say it was open but sadly this was not the case.

We dove on down the original Route and passed a variety of wrecked or abandoned gas stations and motels.  Sad really.  Would have been nice to see them preserved.

This gas station was protected by a fence and a barking dog, otherwise we would have got close-ups!

We drove on on then suddenly we were at the border with Arizona!   The Colorado River forms the border here and it was strange to look across the river at California.  It was made extra strange by the fact that our watches and clocks suddenly went forward an hour because Arizona does not recognise putting the clocks back!!

Stopped here on the border at Topock and had lunch overlooking the river which was nice.

In the afternoon, we reached the town of Oatman.  What an amazing place!  There are burros here that have the right to roam the streets and of course come up to you for food.  You can buy food for them but we didn't
The scenery beyond Oatman was simply stunning!  The desert breathtaking and we stopped simply to listen to the silence.

No idea what this mountain was called but it was simply awesome in the true sense of the word.

We drove towards this mountain for some time and eventually drove through the pass and down the other side.  There was a lot of sage coloured plants which we assumed were a type of sage too.

A wonderful trip today which finished at Kingman where we got jumpers out!!
